Smith

An orthodontist should worry about athletes’ teeth, you might think. But not Dr. Smith. He preferred providing a good view in bad weather conditions instead of protecting gums. Moving from the mouth upwards to the eyes, at least he remained close to his field of expertise, when he invented goggles for skiers in the 1960s. Using those goggles on bikes, too, was a logical move, and from there it was just a small step to building state-of-the-art biking helmets.

Things to know about Smith

After selling his first skiing goggles in 1965, Dr. Bob Smith kept on working on his products for many years without giving them a proper name. He rather invested his time into dreaming up a venting system and a rim made from soft foam, that kept his goggles from fogging up and made them comfy to wear or the roll-off film, a stick-on foil that can be torn off when the lens gets too dirty. The company Smith Sport Optics, Inc. was founded years later in the Eighties. Today it is located in Ketchum, Colorado, one of the planet’s prime locations for skiers and mountain bikers.

Skiing goggles become biking goggles

There are no recordings as to when exactly somebody came up with the idea to wear skiing goggles on a bike. Goggles protected the sensitive area around the eyes from the sun, sleet and snow, that much was common knowledge already. But that they could do even more for a biker, who does not like to stick to paved roads, was a revelation. Whenever offroad bikers hit the dirt, dust and flying objects become a problem. Wide screen goggles and biking sunglasses make sure that those adventure seekers will not need a service dog on their next ride. Smith’s goggles offer you a choice of replaceable glasses in different colors. The shades of the lenses are not meant to fit your biking outfit, however, they all have a function and let you see clearly in any kind of weather.

Smith Helmets

Smith’s biking helmets combine the super-safe MIPS system with many homegrown inventions. Apart from innovative materials that make them very lightweight and sophisticated safety features, those MTB helmets, Trekking and City-Helmets and Dirtbike Helmets are very comfortable to wear. They also look really good, so forget about those excuses, put on a helmet when you go out riding!

All things put together, the everyday name of Smith stands for outstanding products for bikers. If you want to protect your eyes and head while riding your bike, the Smith Brand Shop on BMO is the right place to look for your gear.
